Dr. Hermes House Museum

The Dr. Hermes House Museum (Casa-Museu Dr. Hermes in Portuguese), the private museum belonging to the doctor from Aveiro, Hermes de Oliveira Castanhas, was inaugurated in the early 1990s and houses his collection of instruments and objects related to medicine on permanent display.

It has been the venue for various visits and events related to the history of medicine and was recognised in 2013 by Aveiro City Council as a Monument of Municipal Interest.

The collection

The collection encompasses objects, medical, clinical and scientific apparatus, books, paintings, sculptures and furniture from various fields related to medicine and health sciences. Spanning different eras and origins, these pieces weave a rich, multidisciplinary narrative that reflects the evolution of society, science, medicine, politics, architecture, culture and mindsets.

Comprising approximately 1,800 pieces dating from the 16thto the 20th century, the collection’s oldest item is the historical work Medici Physici Praestantissimi curationum medicinalum, by Amato Lusitano, published in 1580.

In terms of classification, the collection falls into the supercategory Science and Technology, the category Research and Development and the subcategory Medical and Health Sciences. It includes a wide range of objects from various specialist areas including anaesthesia, pharmaceutical sciences, surgery, general practice, cardiology, electromedicine and radiology, nursing, stomatology, physiology, gynaecology, laboratory, neurology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, paediatrics and pneumology.

Skope – Health and
Medicine Museum

The Casa Hermes Foundation opened its doors to Skope – Health and Medicine Museum in 2024 with the collection of the former Dr. Hermes House Museum.

Based on the history of medicine, Skope’s mission is to promote knowledge of the historical heritage and its evolution, along with the socio-economic and political framework over time.

It is a space dedicated to health education, where visitors can immerse themselves in a fun and interactive experience to learn more about healthy lifestyles, medicine of the future and humanity’s enduring desire for longevity.
