In October, the Casa Hermes Foundation inaugurated Skope – Museum of Medicine and Health, in Aradas.
The objects on display in the various rooms that make up the museum belonged to the personal collection of Hermes de Oliveira Castanhas, a doctor and collector from Aveiro who was passionate about his profession and dedicated himself to gathering pieces from different periods and origins, which he called ‘perfections of the past’. After his death, it was up to his family to continue his legacy, rethinking the future of the collection and the Dr. Hermes House Museum, which now houses the Museum of Medicine and Health.
Skope has six rooms dedicated to medical specialities and important historical periods. It begins at the origin of everything, with a room dedicated to birth and the specialities of obstetrics and gynaecology, and advances chronologically through various moments in history – such as Classical Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Enlightenment – and through the advances of the 19th century, ending with the great transformation of medicine in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Museum also has an interactive and digital area dedicated to the Medicine of the Future and healthy lifestyles, with activities focused on the importance of sleep, physical activity and healthy eating, among other things.
